Butler Networks DSL FAQ

  1. Do I have to use PPPoE for the 3Mbps x 384K service?
Yes. This is a requirement of the Bellsouth BBG topology. It is completely out of our control, and absolutely necessary to take advantage of the BBG based services (3.0Mpbs x 384Kbps ADSL and 256Kbps x 128Kbps ADSL).
  2. Can I still have a static IP address if I have to use PPPoE?
Absolutely. If you are a new customer, you will get a new static IP address. If you are a current customer, changing to PPPoE for any reason, you will keep your static IP address.
  3. How do I configure my Windows XP box for PPPoE?
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;283070&sd=tech
  4. When will you offer the new 3Mbps x 384Kbps service?
This service is available now for qualified users. Please contact us directly to see if your connection qualifies.
  5. Do you block any ports
No, we do not block any ports.
  6. What is the upload and download speed of your service
Please refer to our services list.
  7. Why is there a difference in price between the business and residential service?
This is a good question since the bandwidth is the same. The business account comes with more static IP's, as many as you can reasonably justify. In addition, business customer with critical needs are more likely to get calls returned off-hours.
  8. Are email accounts included?
Yes, the details of this are listed under each account in the services list.
  9. Do you impose a file size-cap on inbound or outbound email?
Attachments can be as large as you like, however there is a 40 MB mailbox limit for each mailbox.
  10. What is your backbone connectivity like?
We peer with ENA. ENA provides Internet Access to about one million students across TN. They have upstream connectivity through Bellsouth, Sprint and several other Tier 1 carriers.
  11. Which router/bridge does your company sell?
We are now selling the Efficient Speedstream. We typically set it up in bridged mode. This allows our customers to use a linksys or netgear router to act as a firewall.
  12. I already have a DSL modem...would the startup fees be reduced?
Yes, if your DSL modem is ADSL compliant and can be set to RFC1483 bridged mode with VPI=8 and VCI=35, you can save the $160 cost of purchasing our DSL modem.
  13. What if I want to use a Linksys wireless router/access point. Do I still need the modem/bridge that you are talking about as well?
Yes, you still need the DSL modem/bridge. The linksys product is just an Ethernet to Ethernet gateway. The Best Data router that we provide converts the dsl signal to a usable Ethernet signal. The linksys simply provides additional NAT and DHCP features allowing you to add multiple computers to your Ethernet connection.
  14. Can I really get a static IP with the residential account at no additional charge?
    Yes.
  15. Is your company basically reselling Bellsouth DSL?
We are not reselling Bellsouth DSL, rather, we are using their copper and DSLAMS and bringing you back to our own POPs and supplying you with our own IP addresses.
  16. What kind of policy does your company have on running servers?
You may run servers. Upstream bandwidth is limited by the connection you choose from our services list.
  17. I have a few usenet newsgroups that I keep up with and was considering going to your service but, I'd have to have a good news server along with ADSL before I switched.
We do not offer a news server. There are some standalone services that provide newsgroups independently. It is a very difficult service to maintain.
  18. Is there any correlation of having problems on a dsl line where there is a 2.4Ghz cordless phone?
    No.
  19. Do you use dsl splitters or filters?
We typically put filters on every device except the DSL modem. This keeps phones and faxes from interfering with the DSL services riding on the same phone line. 3 filters are provided at no charge when you sign up for an account.
  20. I'd like to look at the administration settings of my Best Data DSL modem
The Best Data DSL modem is usually configured at 10.0.0.1 on your network. Simply open a web page to 10.0.0.1. The username is 'root'. The password is w4cox2iv. I have an Efficient Speedstream modem provided by Butler Networks. Can I configure it?
No, this modem is pre-configured and autosenses your vpi/vci. It acts only as a bridge and has no method to change its settings.
  21. I've got a Cisco DSL Router. Can you help me with the config?
Thanks to Neil Norman for this sample config.
  22. What does the config for Multilink PPP (bonding 2 dsl lines) look like for My Cisco 1700 series router?
    View Config.
